The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the effectiveness of psychosomatic rehabilitation in Germany

Background and Objective
A disaster is a collectively experienced, potentially traumatic event with a sudden start, limited duration, and can be natural, technological, or human-made (Beaglehole et al., 2018). Under this definition, the covid-19 pandemic qualifies as a significant disaster. It dramatically altered work settings, limited leisure and social activities, affecting people worldwide, amid uncertainties about its course, severity, and long-term impacts. Research indicates that mental health issues, such as depression, are more prevalent and intensify following major disasters. In detail, studies have shown heightened psychological distress and a higher incidence of psychiatric disorders among individuals affected by natural disasters compared to unexposed individuals and to conditions before the disaster (Norris, Elrod, 2020; Pieh et al., 2020; Salari et al., 2020; Xiong et al., 2020). The aim of the present study is to investigate the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on the effectiveness of psychosomatic rehabilitation.
Take-Home-Message
The pandemic has significantly reduced the effectiveness of psychosomatic rehabilitation, affecting a broad spectrum of psychosocial indicators. Even two years into the pandemic, this diminished effectiveness persists. Analysis suggests that the pandemic's impact can be categorized into direct effects on individuals and indirect effects through exacerbating occupational challenges, with the latter remaining a significant issue over two years postpandemic onset. Furthermore, the study indicates that only two-thirds of the mental health impact is directly pandemic-related, while the remaining third stems indirectly from job and workplace challenges.
