Assistive and Inclusive Technology Design for People with Disabilities (Special Needs)

This chapter explores the critical importance of user-centred design in developing assistive and inclusive technology (AT) for people with disabilities. The chapter highlights that while technology has profoundly improved quality of life for the general population, individuals with special needs often find these solutions unsuitable, thereby being excluded from their benefits. A structured, user-centred approach to solution development is advocated, based on extensive exploratory research which suggests significant room for improvement in delivering effective AT solutions.

The chapter discusses various design methodologies and frameworks that are essential for creating technologies that are not only functional but also adaptable to the unique needs of users. It addresses the crucial elements such as usability, customisation, support systems, and economic considerations, which collectively ensure the technology’s practicality and accessibility. Moreover, it underscores the importance of considering ethical and environmental impacts in the design process. By integrating these multifaceted approaches, the chapter guides researchers and practitioners towards developing technologies that genuinely enhance the independence and inclusivity of people with disabilities.
