Prevention in the Skin Protection Centre - A Concept for the Successful Avoidance of Occupational Disability

A variety of measures is needed to prevent job loss as a result of an occupational skin disease. In order to achieve a successful restoration of work capacity and stable health of the skin, diagnostics and therapy are important but in many cases not sufficient. The concept of a Skin Protection Center (German: Hautschutzzentrum), a specialized dermatological doctor’s office focussing on occupational skin protection, combines all the necessary requirements for a comprehensive treatment in cooperation with the Institution for Statuatory Accident Insurance and Prevention.

The quick and extensive evaluation of all the causes and possible cures of a skin disease is crucial. The longer this process takes, the higher is the risk of permanent loss of the ability to work in the given field due to newly developed allergies and chronification. In addition to both organizational and technical changes at the workplace, a key factor for the success of the Skin Protection Center is to establish and encourage permanent behavioural changes in the patient, ensuring successful treatment on a long-term basis.
